About the Project
As beverage manufacturers shift away from artificially sweetened drinks, their focus is increasingly on both the appearance and taste of the beverages they formulate and blend. This trend is prompting manufacturers to reevaluate their existing water processing and filtration systems.
In the past, beverage manufacturing revolved around particulate filtration, followed by carbon filtration and then ozonation, with minimal consideration given to mineral impurities and their impact on taste and appearance.
Today’s understanding that water serves as the primary ingredient in beverages has reshaped this approach, with a majority of specialty blenders and packagers turning to membrane technologies, specifically nanofiltration and reverse osmosis.
Certain fruit-infused beverage manufacturers utilizing nanofiltration or reverse osmosis water have moved away from ozone addition due to its adverse effect on the final product’s appearance and taste. Instead, in-line ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is employed just before blending and bottling to treat the nanofiltration or reverse osmosis water. The ultraviolet systems used are validated to comply with EPA and local state regulations and standards.
